Help Mom Celebrate Her Day with a Bit of Love and Tech

Category: Hardware Published on Wednesday, 30 November -0001

According to Wikipedia, Mother's Day (traditionally the second Sunday in May) is "a modern celebration honoring one's own mother, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society." But, in our house, Mom can't celebrate her day without a gift of tech.

For example, you can add a bit of style to her life with a protective case for the new iPhone 6, 6 Plus, Galaxy S6 or S6 Edge you bought her.

If it's pure protection you're looking for, the folks at OtterBox, LifeProof and Trident have cases that not only offer over-the-top protection for that new phone, but also make that new phone waterproof. Like several other case manufacturers OtterBox and LifeProof have yet to introduce cases for the S6 Edge, but they have you covered for the other three smartphones.

The cases from these three companies tend to be a bit more expensive than the competition, but we've found that the extra protection they provide is worth it.

The OtterBox Defender Series ($49.99 to $59.99) offers three-layer protection including a built-in screen protector. OtterBox also offers the Commuter and Symmetry series, which offer a bit less protection. Plus, if mom has an iPhone 6, you can get one for as little as $19.95.

The cases from LifeProof make your new smartphone dust proof and waterproof, but can also take a bigger bite out of your wallet. For example, the Nuud and Fre cases range in price from $79.99 to $89.99. For those extra bucks you get cases that are submersible to 6.6 feet and are also sealed against dirt and snow. Plus, they are built to military-grade drop standards to absorb impacts.

The Trident Kraken cases tend to favor iPhones over Galaxies, offering an antimicrobial case for $79.95 and a Qi wireless charging case for $39.95 (the Samsung phones have Qi wireless charging built into the phones), but do offer the AMS case ($49.95), which offers drop and dust protection for the S6 and S6 Edge. In addition to three-layered protection, these Kraken cases also make your mom's phone dust proof. They also come with a "holster" that contains a belt clip.

If mom values style over protection, cases from companies such as Under Armor Gear (UAG), iLuv, Verus and Speck may fit the bill.

The UAG cases (average price $34.95) offer a bit more protection than the others, with a two-layered case, rubberized screen protection and a clear HD screen guard. They also meet military drop test standards. UAG also offers two Folio wallet-type cases that can be used to carry up to three credit cards.

Speck cases are basically hard-shell, high impact cases designed to protect the back of the phone. These cases come in a variety of styles. The CandyShell Wallet cases for the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S6 phones ($39.95) can be used to carry up to three credit cards or a bit of cash. The company also offers a bit more protection with its Mighty Shell and CandyShell Faceplate line of cases ($44.95 to $59.95 depending on the level of protection mom needs).

Cases from Verus and iLuv may fit the bill if mom has more than three credit cards or wants her case to replace her wallet.

Verus makes a wide variety of cases ranging from simple Crystal Light protection ($17.99) to its multi-layered Iron Shield Series ($39.99). But the one we REALLY like is the Dandy Diary Wallet Case ($34.99). This is a leather case with a magnetic strap that protects the face and back of the phone and can be used to carry a stack of credit cards, ID cards or cash.

We're anxiously waiting for the folks at iLuv to release their Jstyles cases ($54.95) for the S6 Edge, but they are available for the iPhone 6 series and the Galaxy S6. These cases not only protect the whole phone, but have twice the capacity to carry all of the stuff you have in your wallet than other wallet-style cases.

Right now, only the Vyneer ($19.95) and Gelato ($14.95) cases are available for the Edge, but hopefully that will change as demand for the phone increases.

The iLuv case offering the best protection for the iPhone 6 series or the Galaxy S6 is the DropArmor rugged impact case ($24.99), which features two-piece, dual-layered protection.
