Gifts from Apricon and OWC
Don't Forget your Computer this Christmas
Christmas shopping done yet? I know you've gotten gifts for Aunt Milly and Uncle Jake, but what about your computer? Doesn't it deserve a present or two on Christmas Day?
The folks at Apricorn and Other World Computing (OWC) have developed the perfect gift for your laptop: hard drive upgrade kits.
Apricorn's EZ-Upgrade Universal Hard Drive Upgrade Kit ($39 plus the cost of the replacement drive) comes with everything you need to make the swtich. The kit includes:
- A Hi-Speed USB 2.0 hard drive enclosure (USB 1.1 compatible).
- Apricorn's Upgrade Suite Software CD with Apricorn's EZ Gig II Cloning and Imaging software for Windows and
ShirtPocket SuperDuper! for Mac. - A USB cable.
All you need to do is:
- Install the cloning software.
- Insert your new drive into the USB enclosure.
- Attach it to a USB port on your laptop.
- Let the software "clone" your old hard drive to your new one.
- Remove the old drive and install the new one.
And, as a bonus, you can insert the old hard drive into the enclosure and use it as a backup for your operating system, etc. or you can use the enclosure for your new drive and not replace the old one.
Those of you wanting to suprise your Windows laptop, MacBook or MacBook Pro this Christmas should check out the OWC Do-It-Yourself Hard Drive Kits ($95 to $199 depending on the capacity and type of hard drive).
All of these kits come with:
- A 500 GB or 1 TB 2.5-inch hard drive.
- An OWC Express USB 2.0 Enclosure.
- A tool kit.
The folks at OWC recommend that you perform a clean install of your new hard drive using the Apple Migration Tool. But, if you insist on cloning your old drive, you can download Carbon Copy Cloner, which is free from www.bombich.com.
You can also purchase Drive Genius, which is $39 ($60 if bought separately) if ordered with a kit. In addition to cloning and other useful tools, this software will repair, defrag, delete duplicate files, test and ‘data shred’ files on your hard drive.
As with the Apricorn kit, you can use the USB enclosure to attach your new or old drive to a USB port.
